Hey Froggy, Here is a question for you concerning Jews. Why is giving in increments of 18 important? If I am understanding it correctly 18 is very special to Jews in their giving. Like $18, $180 etc. Or would it be $18, $36, $72 and so on. I am sincere in asking, just wanted some insight. (I have more questions.)
Oh, gosh, Hooly, our site expert on that is Eva--I'm just trying to get through the 613 mitzvot, the Complete Idiot's Guide to the Talmud, and understanding the holy days and traditions, etc.--I think Pollywog got me a couple books on learning a little Hebrew (and of course I have my Mishkan), but that's all, hon, so far.
Yikes, I'm no expert. It's embarrassing to admit, but converts (or those wanting to ;-)) know more because they have to study. If you're born Jewish, chances are that any real info will have to be remembered from Sunday School (and let's not go into how long ago that was)!
Again to my embarrassment, the holidays, the prayers in Hebrew (which I don't read or understand) I know from repetition since childhood.
As to giving in $18 denominations, the number 18=Chai, a Hebrew word which translates to Life (like the toast, L'Chaim means "To Life".) It's considered a lucky number.
I've probably confused you more, Hooly, haven't I?
Thanks guys! Here are some numbers to consider regarding the price of the medicine Gleevec: Price per MONTH! in US-$5736.50 CAN-$3200.00 India-$325.00(Generic-stolen patent).
I kind of got that from the Jewish symbolism info. What I understood was that 18 is "very special" in giving. Just was wondering the history involved.
But wait, I have more. Questions that is. What about the Mezusah? (sp) I was reading about the Hebrew scribes that painstakingly write the scriptures on the little scrolls. Where would I buy a real one?
Froggy, I'm mesmerized by the Puffin Show! He's going to get the hugest head! I'll look through my photo files and see what others I can find.
Gloria, a mezuzah is for protection of one's home, although they have been used as jewelry for vain little Jewish girls (oh, that's me. I used to have a mezuzah necklace). The scroll inside is part of the hebrew prayer (the Shema). It's supposed to be written by specially trained scribes. Then the scroll is rolled up and put into a case (the mezuzah). Also, a rabbi should come over to bless your home and put up the mezuzah on the right side of the front door. I'm pretty sure my father was the one who put ours up on each home we had and I don't remember him saying any prayers.
You can buy one on the internet or any store that sells Judaica items would have them.
I have seen the mezuzah in a Jewish store in Seattle. I had to ask what they were. There were so many.. different sizes, wood, metal, different colors. Some intricate, some plain. Again the Internet to the rescue. Have a look.
Good night, Phooey. Have a good nights rest. God bless you.
Oh yes Polli, I have seen them on line. I actually had one but after I did some reading about them it seemed to defile the custom of hanging one at my door that said "Made in China." I love the blessing that says I am blessed when I come in and blessed when I go out....
Good morning Ponders. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, feeling better now.
ReplyDeleteAw, Phooey. You have been on my mind. So glad you are feeling a little better.
ReplyDeleteYay, Phooey wrote--and there's my Gloria. Three hours sleep was the best I could do--getting Pollywog off to work--I'll have to lay down later...
ReplyDeleteHow's frogs... and Puffin? ;-)

Phooey, I missed your post about meds. OMG! and I whine about having to pay for Plavix! What does Gleevec treat?
ReplyDeletePhooey, it's always good to hear from you. Glad you're feeling better. You remain in my prayers every day.
ReplyDeleteGleevec is for treating myeloid leukemia, right? I don't know how anyone can possibly afford that, even the least expensive from India.
I know drug companies need to make a profit, but those prices are over the top ridiculous.
You and your dear wife remain in my prayers.
Eva--you'd better send me more pictures!
