Eva, Wonderful story. Paul Newman, another of our very handsome actors. He was very gracious to keep you company while you waited for cab. It was a sad day when Scott passed. I don't know if I've ever seen a pic of him. Think I'll Google it.
I decided to google him, too and saw that he died in 1978. I didn't remember it was that long ago. He had his father's piercing blue eyes and also his father's love for driving fast. I was so naive back then, I didn't even know he was drunk that night. Charming guy. Very sad.
Thanks for posting the video, EC. How blessed we are. I didn't know that about Charles Durning. Remembering my Grandpa CC (U.S. Army, France, WWI), my Daddy-O (U.S. Navy, Pacific Theatre, WWII), my dear FIL (U.S. Army, North Africa, WWII). Please tell your DH thank-you for his service, EC.
Do yourselves a favor and read Eva's post from yesterday. It is wonderful!
Good morning to all. We are blessed indeed. How nice it is to be in the company of people who recognize that. My Dad served in the Army - Air Corps in the Pacific and Scott was in the Air Force. They were all so young. I am so proud of them and all that served. To me the holidays of Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day are full of emotion and pride. I don't ever want to loose that.
Welcome, Gram. Hope you will just pop in to say hello.
Without cable, I never heard of NCIS until, you talked about it. I have only been able to view their last full vids. So watched the tribute to Ralph Waite as his dad, but what happened to his mom? there was a sentence of her not going for a second opinion, I feel way behind the curve here. Gloria, we are never going to loose our tribute to vets, I do get depressed about the lack of history taught our young, but my family, on both sides, are home schooling and I sent out 'old' history books plus Rush's little book and these 20 somethings are going to take back our country to the founders declarations, all is not lost.
It's a gorgeous day here at the Shore, but Joe & I can't seem to get out. We just keep watching these old war movies. It's hard to believe how patriotic Hollywood used to be!
Eva, I often think about you living so near to the beach. I envy you and Joe. Hope you have a spectacular summer.
911 spoiled travel for me. I am getting the itch to go places again, selectively. BIL lives in Tennessee. Would like to go there and to the gulf while we are still able to travel.
Joe & I just got back from a trip to the end of our street. From there, we could watch the sun set and see all the birds on the next island. They can make quite s racket, but the air was so warm and the breeze so lovely. I sat on the little wooden wall and peered into the water of the Bay and could see little crabs scuttling along. It was so nice that all I could do was send out prayers for our world. G-d has so much on His hands.

This is just fascinating! Not sure how I found it. It is a must watch! Shows Arlington Cemetery and how they prepare the caissons. I tried to find it on YouTube, with no luck. So hope this link works.
I already mentioned my Uncles and DH, but at 55 they sent my BIL to Bagram to set up a MASH, I have the CD, at the same time they sent his son, Airborne, Ranger, and Farsi trained to the sandbox as a spook. He ended up alone in a Paki embassy without backup and just a side arm. He escaped and is home, could have been another Benghazi. BIL came home needed knee replacements and hearing aids, our nephew PTSD, but is doing well. When they sent our Col, BIL, his General told him it wasn't Disney World don't handle the kids, but my CD from him shows all the children his team did surgery on, victims of land mines. They are told to pick up metal for cash, They are beautiful kids, big brown grateful eyes. Thanks for the opportunity to rant, I have been crying all day, we have NO C I C.
I feel as though I've been on the edge all day. When I think of the sacrifice of our military, really really think about what they do, I know I can never be grateful enough. The day is coming (sooner than I thought) where no-one will be able to state with pride their relatives who served, as we all do. The day when people will have had no military in their families for generations.
My great-great-great grandfather, James Harkness, was a sergeant in the Massachusetts regiment in the Revolutionary War; his son James Pelham Harkness, served in the War of 1812, his son Daniel Clark Harkness served in the Civil War. My father was a Pearl Harbor survivor (he was on the USS Vestal, right next to the Arizona) and went on to be involved in some of the early missiles the Navy developed. My brother was Naval Academy Class of '71 with Chic Burlingame, pilot of Flight 77 which hit the Pentagon on 9/11. My husband served in the Air Force. Yes, the traditions run strong in this family. I tried to enlist once, in 1973. I went down to the center in downtown Oklahoma City (side note, it was located in the Journal Record building, which was severely damaged in the OKC bombing, and which now houses the memorial museum) to take the battery of tests to determine what field they will put you in. Apparently I did pretty well, as they wanted to send me to electronics school. I inquired whether that was a seagoing position and I was told that the only seagoing position was quartermaster. OK, I said, I'll be a quartermaster. No, I was told, with your scores, they're not going to put you in what is basically a grocer slot. OK, your loss, I said as I left.
well, for pete's sake I had a long comment that disappeared, and I did a cache clean so can't even go back. I do think the USA missed out on not having Mag part of our service, but I need to go to bed, you guys on the west coast are still up but it is getting dark here and it has been a long, hard day. See ya later. EC

ReplyDeleteIt's been a wonderful day.
Blessed Memorial Day, Phoobers. Thank you for your service. I love you.
ReplyDeleteEC--and everyone--tell us of those in your family who have served so we may honor them, too.

DeleteFroggy, and I love that you have been commenting more lately. You are sorely missed when you are not here.
DeleteHello pond friends,
ReplyDeleteI can't believe what I just did - I wrote a long comment and then posted it on yesterday's page. :(
That's what I get for trying to catch up on the last few days all at one time!
Love to all from absent minded Paget.
Hi Paget,
DeleteAlways a treat to hear from you. When I get home this afternoon, I can move your post over to today. Gotta run for the bus.
