Welcome Pond Family

27 comments:

  1. Woggy and I got to meet Maya Angelou--when we went to one of her poetry readings and I barreled back stage past all the security, ha! We also went to her hometown, Stamps, AK and saw the pond, her school she talked about, and 'downtown'. She was lovely to us.

  2. Hi Ya'll,
I think Froggy meant Stamps, Arkansas. After the performance, Froggy almost ran backstage. The guards asked us "What do you want?" Froggy said, "What do you think!" And I followed Froggy as she walked up to Miss Angelou, most gracious woman to speak with us.

  3. Hello to all. How about our unpredictable weather?

What a nice memory for you sisters to share. You have traveled a bit. Where else have you been? What was your favorite place?

Had an odd thing happen today. Went to the clinic to have blood drawn for routine cholesterol test and the person drawing blood was in training. Her English wasn't very good and she was wearing a habib. I don't encounter many muslims. She did a really good job - it was painless.

    1. Howdy Gloria,
The weather is just plain silly. I dress warm when I leave in the morning (thinking that it may rain???). By noon, I'm cooking in the sun, and it didn't rain.

Yes, Sis and I traveled a little when we lived in Denver. I'll let her tell the fun parts of the trips. We drove to the east coast once, and drove once to Louisiana.

    2. Please share some of your traveling adventures with us.

I recall some of the places we have been and can't believe how many years have passed.

CNN Reporter: Obama’s Speech Earned ‘Icy Reception’ From West Point Grads
Brendan Bordelon / The Daily Caller

"Other reports on the speech also commented on the tepid applause graduating cadets gave their president. Last Sunday, Washington Post columnist Chuck Lane noted that the ongoing VA scandal is a “huge setback” for President Obama’s push to turn the military into a Democratic constituency."

    2. I remember those days, Phooey. Hope the LS works. Guess people like to mess with us and eventually get bored with it.

  6. So I wrote this enormous post and got interrupted by a phone call. During the call, my computer timed-out and the post went somewhere out there. My post now seems trivial because the phone call was that the mother of one of my childhood friends passed away today.

Please say a prayer for Gina and her family. Gina's mother had a wonderful life, but they grieve.

  7. Good Morning Ponders,
Happy Friday. I am on way to bus. Sunshine is out. Hopefully we'll have a summer day in Seattle. Yesterday it was freezing. See ya when I get back this afternoon.

  8. Phooey, I don't know which of our girls have vets, but what happened today really matters.

My guy got crap care in Orlando , great in Daytona, but when they screwed up his colonascopy we got an 18,000 bill when he bled out in Tennessee. The system is broken but let me say his brother is a Dr in the Pittsburgh VA and would never let this carp happen, he was also sent to Baghram to set up a MASH and saved children. They are not all bad, just the administrators that want their bonus.

    1. EC, moving to the Tampa Bay area VA saved my life ! It's too long of a story to tell however, one Doctor here looked at my past blood tests and records(from Asheville,NC) and asked ..... do you know you have cancer ?.... I said no. He said.... well, you do and you are about to go through hell. He saved my life !

    2. Thank God for that doctor, Phooey. We're so glad you're with us.

    3. EC,
You must be so proud of having a doctor in the family. I never met anyone from a MASH unit, but they did amazing things. Don't know how we are going to get the VA system working right. That would have been a wonderful project for our government to fix; not the health care system. The health care system just needed a few things fixed at a time, not a complete utter-mess of an overhaul.

On second thought, maybe we don't want this government group to fix anything!

Phooey, we are so thankful that you found a doctor who took the time to help you. We love our Phoo-man!

  9. My Dad got good care at the VA Hospital in Augusta (I think) Georgia. All I know is that it was a 3 hour drive away and since he (so far) can afford his private health care, that's what he's doing. I guess it just depends on the place. As you say, LS, they aren't all bad.

  10. Good morning, deers. Have been meaning to say how much I love the pond picture.

From earlier up in the comments about travel: It would be fun for everyone to write about some of the favorite places they've visited. None of us are spring chickens and we all have been somewhere during our lives. I'm not a world traveler (Hawaii the most far from home I've ever been).

I'll start with my most recent trip last September when I visited my son. I stayed in Berkeley where he lives, but dragged him and his GF all over San Francisco for 3 days. We were on the finish line of the America's Cup when U.S. Oracle won! Walked the Embarcadero all the way to Pier 9. Trolley car ride, Lombard Street, China Town, Haight-Asbury, Golden Gate. I wore them out! He took me to a fancy Japanese restaurant for my b-day dinner where a buddy of his is sous chef. We had a private sushi bar and that young man served us dish after dish that weren't on the menu. One of my main interests when I travel is food. I ate a gob of terrific seafood in those short 4 days.

Another of my favorite places is Hot Springs, Arkansas. Will save that for later. Come on! Tell us some stories!

    1. Oh Surfie I loved San Francisco! It's one of my earliest memories. We stopped there for a couple of days visiting my uncle in 1955 when we were on our way (via ship) to Japan where my dad was stationed. It was "occupied Japan" then. We went to the conservatory at Golden Gate Park and rolled down the grassy hill. I last went there in '94 for a MacWorld Expo (and to receive an award) and rode the trolleys everywhere. One time I was there for an Expo ('92 or '93) I was with another gal and we rented a car and drove out to the conservatory - it was just as I remembered.
Thanks for your visit today and good hugs. Our garden looks great and you're going to find a spot for that pot, I have faith in you.
Hope your week is awesome, and all the Ponders too.

    2. Surfie and Magdalene,
What a fun way to spend time at The Pond. Froggy and I had delightful trips driving out of Denver. One of my favorite trips was driving to Yellowstone. We stayed a night at the lodge next to Old Faithful. There were a lot of animals, and hot pools of mud and colored "earth??"

I recall that we were driving a Volkswagen bug. I stopped along the road, and got out to have a look. I turned around, and there stood a buffalo! Scary. They are NOT tame. He could easily have pushed our tiny car across the road, and over the cliff into the lake below. I hastily got back in the car, and we drove on. Some tourists are mistaken when they think they can take a picture of themselves ...and a bison.

Don't think Froggy has been to San Fran. She still has that to look forward to. I've been to San Francisco a couple times. Rode the trolleys. (Everyone has to ride the trolleys!) Visited Fisherman's Wharf, and drove over Golden Gate to Sausalito. It was an artist colony back in the 60's and 70s.

One of our road trips from Denver, Froggy got out her maps, and guided us to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. I'm sure that we also drove through Hot Springs. I'll let Froggy tell about that trip. Eureka Springs is one of Froggy's favorites. Also went to Stamps, Arkansas, where Maya Angelou was raised.

    3. Surfie,
Again you need to write about your travels, and include a recipe from each of your travels. Sometimes I watch Anthony Bourdain and his TV travels where he ends his show eating a meal at a local establishment. (Note that these are on CNN.)

  11. I meant to say Eureka Springs (not Hot Springs). When I was a kid, our family didn't have much money, but we did have enough to vacation in Eureka Springs once. One of my favorite pictures from childhood was of me walking out of the lake with my donut-shaped floating thing around my waist, clearly mad about something. That float was printed to look like a frog!

Yellowstone is on my bucket list. Hope you tell us some travel stories, Froggie!

    1. Just outside of Eureka Springs there is a chapel in the woods, just the way you would do it if you had a mind: all glass and wood, with the outside green reaching in, ceiling reaching to the sky. Only been there once, but I recognized it from a dream I had as a child. Talk about spooky, walking into a place you thought existed only in your dreams.

  12. We have been to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. The year we traveled to Minnesota we thought it would be good to see some places on the way. My brother and family lived in Rochester, MN. That year there was terrible flooding of the Mississippi River. Everything was still really green for that time of year. We observed a lot of crop damage along the way. We stopped to see the battlefield and museum of the Battle of Little Big Horn, stopped in Deadwood South Dakota, Mt Rushmore and drove through the Badlands. Viewing it from the highway was good enough for me. While in Rochester we visited the Mayo (clinic) family mansion. Interesting. They actually damned the river to make hydro power for their home! Would not be allowed today. There is so much to see in this vast country. 9-11 ruined me for travel as I developed a real fear and mistrust of people. I am getting over it and am wanting to go, see and do again. It is amazing what you can squeeze into 2 weeks.
