Get Ready! Christmas is coming.

  1. Good Morning Pond Family.
I've been forgetting to put up new pics. Charlie Brown is a good start to the week. Hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas Season ...and snow! I woke up early, then Froggy got up too. So I am about ready for a pre-morning nap.

Surfie, I'll try to copy your post to this page. You write such interesting comments. I don't want anyone to miss yours.

  2. Good morning deers!

Wog, I love hearing from you. Your feel good stories are such a treat. How are you and Froggy doing? I would love if you could read comments here to Froggy and type her responses for her. Is she well enough to do that? I worry about you Sisters in Seattle. And love you both very much.

I have a very bad cold and had a stressful week at work. I snapped at an employee Friday who was being ... well, she was being stupid and self-centered and clueless. She's very young. This is her first job. I wish there weren't 5 things more important to accomplish at the time and that I had the time to explain real life to her with kindness. Hope she got the message. I will apologize to her Monday morning for being so short with her, and make sure she understands certain things about being an adult. Hope this makes sense.

Freezing cold rain has been coming down since last evening. The streets are just wet for now, but the trees have 1" of ice on their branches. The trees are beautiful, but not a good sign. Another, stronger, blast is set to come in in a few hours with high winds. My fear is that the winds will topple those ice-laden trees and cause power outages.

I'm as prepared as can be for a power outage. I really can't complain. Life is good. What's everyone doing today?

    2. Good morning. I am as prepared as I can be for a power outage. We don't use our fireplace (wood stove) very often but can if we lose power. I have saved one nice stack of wood. We need to cut down some trees, maybe next year. I am going out to look for a certain type of boots for Olivia today. My SIL will come by soon to pick stuff up on his way home. He is on this side of the state doing some work. This is the lean time of year for CPAs. His busy time starts late Janurary. Hope he gets a break in the weather soon.

Paget, how is your scrapbook project advancing? Eva, I cling to every little tidbit of news about our little Nat. I did not know that baby skin of preemies is so delicate. Now it makes sense.

Surfie, I am thinking that the owner is thankful for the day you started working for him. A bonus is a pretty nice reward.

Hi EC, Hi Phooey, Hi Wog and Froggy. What is everyone doing today?

    3. My, the Pond got busy all of a sudden.

EC, I thought you just had to click the "Reply as:" and type your name. That's what I do. So we'll go with Plan B as soon as I can. Glad to see you back. Thanks for the Charlie Brown Christmas video. It says KOMO TV in the corner. That's our Seattle station. I love Charlie Brown and his little tree. Froggy watched The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (the original) with me the other day. That's a classic too.

      Surfie and Gloria,
I always keep some flashlights around, and extra water bottles. Do you know where we used to get power outages? At Mission Bay (De Anza Cove trailer park) in San Diego. Every time we had the heavy, monsoon rains in Jan, Feb....BLINK...no lights.

I'm trying to finish an online application to Bartell Drugstore. Never thought I'd be a cashier again. But if that's what I can get, I'll do it. There is a Bartells a couple blocks from our house. Would make me happy to work so close to home.

Our snow didn't last long. but it looked so cold and wintery yesterday morning. I'll be back later.

    4. One thing we don't have in Floreedah is snow but we did have a couple of tornadoes last week, 2 in Deltona and 1 in Palm coast. Glad you liked Charlie Brown, it has been 'sanitized' since the original, that's why I saved this version. Cashier might not be so bad in a drugstore, I don't think I would have the stamina in a regular store, might smack an idiot.. But we had a RiteAid in Rochester,NY and I enjoyed the shoppers, a little different group that comes in for meds. We had a Rochester councilman that palmed a 56 cent box of gauze ! and a lady that used to come in and comb her hair from the bin of combs, eek, other that those two, we had a nice store. EC now it wants a profile again, jeezz

    5. Wog, Bartell is a nice smaller drugstore and I think the chain is still family owned. I would like to have a job again. I miss being around people.

  6. How's Randy, Little Nat, Froggy, 'Wog ........? I feel lonely right now.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Randy will be fine, but he is in a whole lot of pain. He's home, doing a lot of jibberish texting while high on pain meds. He's an hydraulic cylinder tech and his job requires a lot of pulling, pushing, lifting, banging things apart with a sledge hammer. He won't be able to do his job until his sternum heals. I have no idea how long that will take. Good thing he has a lot of PTO on the books and a short-term disability policy so he won't suffer financially.

You still feeling lonely, Phoo? Want me to tell you a story that made me laugh today?

We have a welder, young man in his late 20's. He disappeared from work Friday around 9:30. This morning, I ran everyone's time cards from last week to get payroll going. Here's the conversation:

Jason, you left Friday morning and didn't tell anyone and didn't answer your cell phone.
Yes, ma'am. My girlfriend's dog bit the landlord and I had to run home to put it back inside and make sure the landlord was ok.
    And that took all day?
Well, the dog got loose and ran into the street and got hit by a car so I had to take it to the vet.
You couldn't tell anyone why you were leaving and couldn't answer your cell phone?
Miss Debbie, I was so panicked that I'd be in trouble with my landlord, then so scared for the dog, then so afraid I was in trouble at work that I just couldn't do anything but go home.
    How's the dog?
My girlfriend and I had to spend both of our Christmas bonuses to pay the vet bill, but he'll be OK.
    How's the landlord?
    Mad. Not too mad, though.

Maybe you had to be there, but it struck my funny bone. Also felt sorry for the guy because it was like talking to a 5th grader. The stories I hear at work! I should write a book.

Love you all. Hope to hear from everyone soon. See ya tomorrow!

Joe has an inner ear infection and not a stomach virus. Either way, it doesn't look as though we'll get to spend Christmas with family. What a move this has been! Such a rough transition, my darling Puffin dying, my micro-preemie great-nephew (who just cracked the 3 lb mark!), trying to sell the CA condo, etc. We'll just thank G-d for our blessings and get on with it all, one step at a time.

Welcome EC and I love Charlie Brown. Always have.

  9. Hi Pond Friends,
Finally got Froggy to doctor appointment. The taxi came right away. Didn't have room enough for the wheelchair in the trunk. Had to fold it, and put it next to Froggy on the back seat. I sat in front seat which was pushed way too close to the windshield. She now has a referral to the wound-care clinic to check her feet.

Dear Eva and Joe, you both and Bambu have been in so much distress. It will get better, even though it doesn't feel like it. Take good care of our Joe.

I found a couple interesting articles to post. Will be back soon.

  10. 12 surprising things you can take on a plane

By now most travelers know the Transportation Security Administration’s carry-on rules: Don't bring bottles of liquids more than 3.4 ounces; don't wrap presents because they may be inspected; don't bring knives or sharp objects.

Judging by the endless list of what you cannot carry on board -- antlers, snow globes, Donny’s baseball bats, little Jimmy’s bows and arrows, Dad’s drills and drill bits -- but you might be surprised at what you can bring on board.

The TSA will allow unloaded firearms on board, for instance, but they must be checked, not kept in carry-on. What about camp stoves, parachute rigs, Grandma Sara’s remains or her knitting needles you just inherited?

Here are a host of things that you may want to take on a flight but never thought you could.

  11. WHO KNEW?

Man lays claim to home of family out of town visiting dying relative

An Ohio family is embroiled in a court fight with a man who moved into their home while they were out of town visiting a dying relative.

WLWT News 5 reports the Springdale squatter – Robert Carr – produced a document he'd filed with the local county court when confronted by the displaced family. Carr, who changed the locks on the home and emptied the property of the family’s belongings, says the document -- a so-called “quiet title”-- lays a legitimate claim to the property because the family living there for 21 years had abandoned the home.

"When you abandon a property, bam, walk away from it, 'I ain't never coming back. I don't want nothing to do with it,' right? Somebody can come in, 'Oh, mine,'" Carr told a WLWT reporter. "I have a team of people who go out and I say make sure the house is empty. If it's empty, change the locks.”

  12. HOW DO YOUR DECORATIONS COMPARE TO THIS HOUSE?

Australian family sets world record for Christmas lights

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - An Australian family has reclaimed their Guinness World Record by stringing up more than half a million Christmas lights around their suburban home.

Guinness World Records official Chris Sheedy confirmed Monday that the Richards family of Canberra set the record for Christmas lights on a residential property with 502,165 twinkling bulbs.

The family first entered the famous record book in 2001 with 331,038 multi-colored lights. But they were trumped last year by a family in LaGrangeville, New York, who illuminated their home with 346,283 lights.

The Richards home with its lights on more than 50 kilometers (31 miles) of wire in suburban Forrest will be open to the public from the weekend to raise money for charity.

David Richards - husband of Janean and father of Aidan, 13, Caitlin, 10, and Madelyn, 6 - said most of his neighbors supported the display. But some hadn't spoken to him since the last record was set.

  14. The Frog and Wog taxi trip must have been miserable! But I have to admit that the "movie" that ran in my mind as I read about it made me chuckle. What a bunch of characters we have around here.

Are Froggy's feet OK? How did the trip to the doc go? Is her leg getting any better?

Eva, what a whirlwind you and Joe have been through. I know you know that things will level out and get better. It already is! Little Nat weighs 3 lbs! Now that right there is some terrific news just in time for Christmas. Do you think his Daddy will get to hold him on Christmas?

I've said this before. I work in a reality TV show. There's never a dull moment around there, and I really should start writing down some of the events. Don't know what I'll ever do with them, but I should start writing them down.

What's everyone doing today and tomorrow? We've having family Christmas Eve dinner tonight. Brunch at my sister's house tomorrow morning. I'm going to Karen and Brad's tomorrow night to just hang out and eat leftovers. Brad and I will probably have a Crown Royal or 2! Merry Christmas everyone!

  15. Good Morning Pond Family,
Family tradition in our home is to open gifts on Christmas Eva, but we will wait til tomorrow. Who opens gifts on Christmas Eve, and who waits til Christmas Day?

Surfie, sounds like you are having a very special family get-together. Those are the best times, the memory-makers. About books, I know you have some books to write... Maybe 2014 is the year for you. All you have to do is to write stories, vignettes, notes, ideas, titles in a journal as you think of them.

Froggy needs to see leg doctor for x-ray to see how bone is mending. Feet will need to be seen by wound specialist. Too much to think about some days. I try not to talk to her about it too much. We'll take care of everything "next year."

  16. Happy Christmas Eve deer pond friends!

Welcome, EC. I remember you from the pond. Love your extended name. :)

So much has been happening at the pond! I have you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Yes, Gloria, I finished my 2 month long project yesterday. THen I looked around and thought, now I need to tackle house-cleaning, wrapping presents and baking! But all is good.

The news at our house is my son's wedding last night. He married a lovely lady named Sarah. We think she is great! We had one week's notice of their wedding, so things were a bit rushed, but we had a nice little dinner after the ceremony at a Mexican restaurant, and we'll have a big reception for them in the near future. I need to do a little planning to pull it all off. :)

I have to run and get things moving around here. Grandson will be here later today and now is walking, or as daughter says, running everywhere. I told her we put the unbreakable ornaments on the lower part of the tree, so he can grab them if he wants. She says her worry is that he'll grab the whole tree and pull it down. LOL. I don't care. :)

    Love to all of you!

  22. CHRISTMAS VACATION NEWS:
Russian ship frozen in remote Antarctic: 'Not your everyday search-and-rescue'
By Alexander Smith, NBC News contributor

A Russian passenger ship has become trapped in the remote Antarctic ice more than two days’ sailing away from the nearest rescue vessel, officials said Wednesday.

The MV Akademik Shokalskiy has 74 people aboard including 52 explorers and tourists, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) told NBC News. The ship is almost 1,500 nautical miles (1,726 miles) south of Hobart, a city on the Australian island of Tasmania.

"It is a very remote location so it is not your everyday search-and-rescue mission,” AMSA spokeswoman Andrea Hayward-Maher said.

The ship is 100 nautical miles east of the French Antarctic base Dumont D’Urville. But all those aboard will be spending Christmas Day and the day after trapped about the ice-locked ship.

  23. SANTA WISH MAKES DREAMS COME TRUE:

Stranger Fulfills Girl's Christmas Wish That Fell From Sky

A little girl's letter to Santa launched by a red balloon was found miles away by a stranger who, sensing a connection with its author, wanted to find her and make her Christmas wish come true.

Joie, 5, had written the letter, tied it to a balloon and set it free last week along with the rest of her kindergarten class in Chula Vista, just south of San Diego.

“Dear Santa, I would like to have a mermaid doll with a bow for Christmas. Thank you, Love, Joie,” the letter read.

Defense contract negotiator Terry Hardin was leaving work on Dec. 17 when he noticed a red balloon with something tied to it floating down from the sky. He watched it travel to the ground and into the parking lot. It took three to five minutes, he said.

“I walked over, so interested and intrigued as to what it was,” he recalled.

He said when he noticed the name of the child at the end of the letter, he paused. His mother, Joie Britt, had passed away in August 2012.

  25. Merry Christmas everyone!

Last night (really late afternoon), Joe went to Mass and I ordered pizza for his return. While I waited, I watched Pope Francis celebrate from St. Peters. Beautiful!

After dinner we watched 3 of our favorite movies: A Christmas Carol (1951 version w/Alastair Sim), It's a Wonderful Life and The Bishop's Wife (Cary Grant, David Niven & Loretta Young). Perfect evening.

Today, we made calls to the family and apologized for not being with them. Then we walked to the beach. We were the only people on the sand. It was about 28 degrees. It was a different Christmas Day, to be sure.

Joe feels so badly about not being with his folks, that he's taking a bus up to New York tomorrow. I'll take him to the bus station and pick him up the next morning. I have to stay here and cook food for him to eat while I'm down in Georgia for a week and then I have to do laundry and pack. I'm leaving Saturday morning.

Nathaniel was allowed to be held by his Daddy for his Christmas present. My niece sent me several pictures and baby Nat looks like a little doll. Unfortunately, Daddy looks like a mess. He was so overcome with emotion that every picture makes him look like he was hit by a truck. His eyes are red and he can barely smile. I was so touched that I teared up, too.

Hope everyone has special memories of today in ways big and small. May next year be a better one for us all!!

  27. FRIDAY...
    Yay! I'm happy about that.

I have a story. My neighbor had an amaryllis plant sitting outside her door during Christmas. So I thought she had gone away for the holidays. Sometimes the plant (with beautiful red flowers on top) would disappear, then reappear later in the day. I thought someone must be taking care of it. One day I thought I should see if it needed water. I felt the "dirt." It was terribly dry, so I poured a small cup of water on it.

Yesterday, I was talking with the neighbor, and told her that I had watered her plant. She looked at me funny, and said, "It's a fake plant!"
I said, "You mean I watered a plastic plant?"

  33. BRISTOL PALIN CAN PUNCH BACK:
Bristol Palin: 'Warning: You Might Lose IQ Points By Watching This MSNBC Clip'
    By Noel Sheppard | December 28, 2013

As NewsBusters previously reported, MSNBC's Joy Reid on Thursday badly misinterpreted an Old Testament passage to ridicule former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for having a Christmas tree on Christmas.

On Saturday, Palin's daughter Bristol took to her blog to respond to Reid in a piece she marvelously titled "Warning: You Might Lose IQ Points by Watching this MSNBC Clip":

"I’m happy that channel is now so concerned with the Bible though. But isn’t it amazing that the host believes there’s a passage in Jeremiah that is talking about CHRISTMAS trees?

    That is soo funny.

Is that next to the verses in Lamentations about Rudolph?

Or the one in Leviticus about Frosty the Snowman?

It’s about the best example of Palin Derangement Syndrome I’ve seen lately: using an Old Testament Bible verse about idolatry to talk about a modern Christian tradition? Newsflash, MSNBC: no one worships Christmas trees. Not to mention Jesus was born hundreds of years after that passage was written."

The Legged Squad Support System (LS3) is a rough-terrain robot developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from DARPA and the US Marine Corps. It is designed to carry 400 lbs of payload and travel 20 miles without refueling. LS3 has sensors that let it follow a human leader while avoiding obstacles in the terrain. 35. Good afternoon pond friends,

I wanted to say "thank you" for the kind comments about my son's marriage. :) He's 35, so we've been waiting a long time for him to find the right girl. :)

Right now I plan to venture into the fog and go to the store. Hubby has a bad cold, and needs some meds.

Hope you all have a wonderful Sunday!

    Froggy, how are you doing?

EC, hope to hear from you at the pond!

    Love to all from Paget

  36. Paget,
Wonderful for your family that your son found such a nice girl. You must be so happy. where do they live? Not too far away I hope. I can't keep up with where everyone lives. Seems a lot of people have colds ( or flu) right now. Hope hubby feels better soon. Sometimes there's not much to do but just stay in bed and sleep.

Haven't seen EC for a few days. Probably busy with Christmas and family.

Surfie, Just saw on news that there was earthquake near you. Did you feel it? I keep waiting for some quakes around Seattle.

Froggy's up but seems tired. We are waiting for in-town football. Seahawks are playing St. Louis Rams.

    1. Hi Phooey,
Always a treat for us to hear from you. Glad you enjoy our stories. Also I thought you might like to see the videos about the robots. Pretty amazing stuff. Our Seahawks just won today's game, so everyone in Seattle is celebrating. I'm going to celebrate with a nap.
