How's your Winter? Let it snow...NOT!

  1. Good Morning Pond Family,
How's it going for your Sunday morning? I thought we could start our week with a snow picture!
Too early for me to be up. Going to snuggle on sofa in front of TV. Will be watching football this afternoon. I'll check for some news articles later and post them. Surely there must be some interesting news somewhere in the world.

  2. Football today. My guys are already discussing it. There is nothing else. Note to self: must make snacks.

    Except Downton Abbey.

    1. Hi Gloria,
What kind of snacks are good for football? I'd like a big bowl of hot wings, chips, salsa. Not sure which game we'll watch. I'll let Froggy pick the games today. Our Seahawks aren't playing. Probably start with the Chargers and Bengals at 10am. There are going to be some games played in some really brisk weather and maybe some snow.

    2. Hi Wog,

Hubby is hoping San Francisco loses - I guess that's what all Seahawks fans would like to see happen!

Gloria, I keep hearing about Downton Abbey. Just saw a comment on FB from my BIL about it, and he never posts anything! It must be a good show. I guess I'd have to go back to season one to understand what's happening. :)

    3. Paget, after I listened to Rush talk about it I started watching. Then I ordered the past seasons from the library. I really like it but then I like Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice.

Wog, today for our dining pleasure we are having my world famous dough wrapped weiniesand chex mix. These are some high class appetizers.

    4. Paget,
We are watching football (between naps). 49ers and Green Bay. Then the announcers will have to tell us who beats what...if this team wins or that team loses.

      Gloria...
I like your high-class appetizers. Just right for football.

We've never seen Downton Abbey. Sounds like it's really well done.
Going to catch the last five of the game. OOPs..may be be a longer game. It's tied!

  3. Hello pond friends,

Well now it's my turn. I just wrote a long post that suddenly disappeared as I was going to hit the "Publish" button. Dang! I'm going back to my old method of writing out my comment in Outlook, and then copying it to the blog so I'll have it if the page goes crazy.

EC, my email is Paget651@gmail.com. Are you in sunny Florida with Phooey? I bet it’s a lovely place to live, especially now with all the nasty weather that's hitting the rest of the country! My favorite picture of the day was of a snow filled yard, which included a sign that was half buried in the snow. The sign said "Stop Global Warming!" hehe, I love it.

Stay safe and warm Surfie and Eva! Which reminds me, where is Eva? I sure hope everything is okay!

Wog, are you cooking that pot roast today? A roast beef dinner reminds me of my childhood. Mom usually had roast (or baked chicken) for Sunday dinner. It was also at 1:00 p.m., and was the best meal of the week. The rest of the week we had "supper" at 5 or 6. Just some added trivia, but it's fun to remember.

Froggy, I hope you're feeling better, and that your wounds are soon healed. I pray that this will be a very good year for you!

    Love to all from Paget

    1. Paget, I did cook today. Was a good and tasty roast. Also brown and serve rolls. Some meals and smells do remind of Mom's special cooking. Moms always cook the best dinners. I did wonder where EC lived. I'd live in Florida except for the hurricanes and big cockroaches. So we live where we can get earthquakes.

    2. A pot roast may be on the menu this week for us too. I do mine in a crock pot. Sure makes the house smell good while cooking.

I cooked a big pot roast for Val's family, it was devoured in one meal. Not even a scrap left.

  4. Happy New Year to all you deer Ponders!! Finally, back in touch after a week in Georgia. Now trying to catch up with everything. I missed the blizzard that socked the northeast coast, but Joe spent a couple of days digging out. Piles of snow are still around, but the temps went up to 57 and when I came in last night (and that's a story) the fog was heavy! Still is. Tomorrow, the high is supposed to reach 10. I'd better get out to the grocery store today, fog or not.

I had a lovely visit with my family and went to the hospital every day with my niece to visit baby Nathaniel. He just keeps getting bigger and now weighs in at 4 lbs!!! Four days ago, the docs told Nikki that she can start trying to nurse him once a day. The little guy is going to be a champion. He figured it out right away, latched on, and went to town for about 15 minutes. Then he passed out :) According to the nurses, he was so tuckered out from his efforts that he slept deeply for hours afterwards. Each day, he gets better at it and for longer periods of time. Of course, they aren't going to stop the tube feeding any time soon.

My dad is hanging in there and I got to spend some quality football watching time with him. He has been an enormous help to Nikki, always driving over whenever she calls. He babysits the 3 year old and brings food for Nikki and her husband. It has been a trying time for everyone, but the work has paid off big time!

Those are the high points of my week. I missed everyone. I did check email, so I got EC's and now I'm going through the Pond and hearing prayers needed (you've got them), Tim's wedding (great story, Surfie), Paget's tough news (I know you'll make it), Phooey's sage advice re husbands, and Gloria, I'm a Jane Austen fanatic. 'Wog, don't come to Georgia either if you don't care for cockroaches. We have whoppers! Big kisses to you, Froggy!

    1. Eva, the news about little Nathaniel brought tears to my eyes. 4lbs - Wow. We will see how much of a change comes to him by next year.

    2. I just wanted to hold him so much!! Only his parents can hold him (& mainly just his mother). I touched his little hands and stroked his cheeks, but that was all I was allowed to do. If he gets to go home as planned in mid-February, I'll probably get on a plane again in March. I figure that once he's deemed healthy enough to leave the NICU, he's healthy enough to have Great Aunt Eva get her hands on him!

  5. EVA...WELCOME BACK!
Love your post. Lots of good news, especially about our baby Nathaniel. We thought you got snowed in, and lost your electric. What a relief to find that you were in Georgia. We've been watching football too. I'll let Froggy know that you send Big Kisses her way.

  6. Tuesday and all is well in Seattle. Just a little rain. I am on my way to Salvation Army Thrift Store. Froggy is home resting her leg. I'll check back with Ponders when I come home this afternoon.
Phooey, are you getting "cold" weather too?

  7. Good evening deers. Good to hear from everyone. Glad you're back home and that Nathaniel is doing so well. I'd sure like to see a picture of him, tubes and all.

Nothing going on around here; just thought I'd check in and say hi!

  8. Hi Surfie,
Always a Pond Treat to hear from you. We have rain in Seattle for a few days, so I am happy to be inside this evening. Not much going on here either. Just relaxing and enjoying the evening.

  9. Yesterday morning when Joe went to work it was 3 degrees. I waited to go out until it was 9 degrees, then I turned around and came back inside. Today, the temp is 0 so far, but it's early. We may rise to double digits. At least the sun is out, which makes it seem better. All in all, it's better than those in the middle of the country!

    1. Eva, this has to be when you are glad you have a cat, and not a dog that you have to walk outside. That's why we don't have a dog. I didn't like taking the dog out in the snow in Denver.

What kind of work does Joe do? Just curious. I applied for two more jobs yesterday. Sooner or later someone will hire me. In the meantime, in a few minutes, I'm off to my part-time work at Salvation Army.

  10. Hi everyone. Yes, WOG, it got cold here also ( 32 degrees with wind ) but we'll be warming now (80 degrees in a couple of days). None of our outdoor plants seem harmed. I'm sure EC's area was colder.

  12. Thursday... I found a news article that I think you will enjoy.

Danish cinnamon rolls too spicy for EU rules

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Easy on the cinnamon! That advice from Denmark's food authority has rankled pastry chefs whose cinnamon rolls were found to violate the European Union's spice rules.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration recently discovered that Danish cinnamon rolls and twists contained more coumarin — a chemical compound in the most common variety of cinnamon — than EU rules allow. Excessive intake of coumarin can cause liver damage.

Danish bakers protested, saying the EU limit is too strict, and would make it hard, if not impossible, to make their cherished pastries.

"A grown man like me could eat like 10 'kanelsnegle' every day for several years and not even get near the limit of what's dangerous to my liver," said Anders Grabow, a spokesman for the Danish Bakers' Association. "I would probably get too much sugar in my body before that."

'WOG says: "This is a great example of government should run the government, and not meddle with my pastries!"

  13. Good Morning all! Temps are warmer, but it's rainy and gray out. Right now, it's very icy. I just got a call from Joe that he can't get to one of his schools because of all of the accidents. 'Wog, Joe is an instructor of the blind and visually impaired. He has a caseload of students at various schools and he drives to the schools on different days to either give them a braille lesson or help them with specific classroom problems due to their low vision. Right now, he's sitting in the parking lot of a store. The owner let him use the bathroom and he has food, so he's going to sit there for an hour or so and then see if he can make it to the next school. He said the police are out in droves.

We might need his particular expertise in this field because I got an email from my niece last night saying the doctor did a vision test and Nathaniel may have some Retinopathy of Prematurity. It's common in preemies due to the oxygen they get. Progress has been made in the last 30 years so that NICU personnel know to look out for ROP and adjust oxygen levels. In the past, it was almost certain that babies born under 29 weeks ended up blind if they survived. The doc will check him again in another week or so and see how his eyes look then. It's worrisome, but if they catch it early enough, chances are they can save his eyesight. Fingers are crossed. Everything else is going so well. He weighs 4.6 lbs now and Nikki is getting to nurse him twice a day. Also, he's out of the incubator and in an isolette. All in all, the news is positive.

    1. Our little Nathaniel is so precious. I love hearing about his progress. A miracle in progress. We are blessed to live in a time of many medical breakthroughs.

I think about how medicine has advanced for my grand daughter's condition. It was only in the 50's that they began to test newborns treat it with a strict diet. Even though PKU is rare there is still R&D going on and the lives of PKUers is now pretty much normal.

Good Morning Eva, seems that every day there is something. Froggy was tiny and had to be on oxygen when she was born. She has some trouble with asthma. Does Nathaniel have his eyes covered? will send prayers for a good outcome for our little guy. I didn't know what Joe did. What an amazing fella you have!

Looks like the Internet "gods" didn't like our picture this week. I'll change it.

  15. TGIF everyone. Phooey my plants made it, even though the temps were below freezing the ground was warm enough. Glad to hear about Nat. My yard is fenced so I don't walk the dogs, but they are in hibernation mode. From the 30's to 80 today, Thermal Stress is Real. DH made it out of Indy and is in GA on his way home. He froze is butt off, heard about a trucker that was trying to free his frozen brakes and got trapped under his truck, his wife called so often the vibration got the phone out of his pocket and he was able to use voice activation to call for help. He is now back in Orlando after Indy EMT's cut his frozen clothes off, -40 !! We carry alcohol to throw on the 5th wheel and brakes. Yikes. ec

    2. EC, what a great story about the truck driver! People around Seattle think 40 degrees is cold. Aren't we silly? I remember being snowed in around Denver. Once Sis and I got stuck for an extra couple days at a hot springs hotel in the mountains out of Denver. We watched the TV, and saw all the people who got stuck at the airport...when we had a hot pool to swim in, and dinner, and a room. When some of the freeways got plowed, we had to take the back road back to town, and then just drove the car into a snow bank outside our apt building.

    3. EC, I love hearing stories about your husband and truck driving. He is always in my prayers. We've had a wild weather change here, although not as drastic as yours. We've gone from snow last Sunday, below zero temps, then today warmth. Supposed to be 68 this Sunday. Glad your plants survived!

  16. Gloria, we just have cloudy and cold so far today. Expecting rain sometime this evening. I stocked up on chips and salsa and popcorn to munch on. Should have saved it for the Seahawks game tomorrow (Saturday), but I don't think the munchies will survive that long!

Eva, We are so proud of our Baby Nathaniel. He's a real trouper, and gaining weight. More prayers on the way for those big, beautiful blue eyes! Can always use another prayer.

Free shuttle bus came this morning, and took Froggy and me to wound care clinic. They said her feet look great. The blister on one foot is almost healed. We probably only need to go to clinic a couple more times.

A woman named Lillian Hyde's bequest provides funding for the shuttles in her name. It's for seniors 55 and older and disabled. Yes, they will take you shopping.

I'm back to post an article that I just read about Reagan's press secretary.

Larry Speakes, press secretary for Ronald Reagan, dies at 74
By Emily Wagster Pettus, The Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. -- Larry Speakes, who spent six years as acting press secretary for President Ronald Reagan, died Friday in his native Mississippi. He was 74.

Speakes died at home in Cleveland, Miss., where he had lived the past several years. Bolivar County Coroner Nate Brown said Speakes had Alzheimer's disease.

"He died in his sleep and it was a natural death," Brown said.

Kenny Williams of Cleveland Funeral Home said Speakes was buried in North Cleveland Cemetery during a private service Friday morning, a few hours after dying.

Speakes became Reagan's acting spokesman after Press Secretary James Brady was injured during an assassination attempt on Reagan in 1981

  20. Saturday at The Pond:
Good Morning from Seattle. Our word for today is RAIN. We have a home Seahawks game today, so they'll be playing on a wet, soon-to-be, muddy field. When teams play in the snow it's fun to watch them slide around. When it rains it's just going to be messy.

  21. Ariel Sharon, former Israeli prime minister, dies

JERUSALEM — Ariel Sharon, the hard-charging Israeli general and prime minister who was admired and hated for his battlefield exploits and ambitions to reshape the Middle East, died Saturday, eight years after a stroke left him in a coma from which he never awoke. He was 85.

As one of Israel's most famous soldiers, Sharon was known for bold tactics and an occasional refusal to obey orders. As a politician he became known as "the bulldozer," a man contemptuous of his critics while also capable of getting things done.

He led his country into a divisive war in Lebanon in 1982 and was branded as indirectly responsible for the massacre of hundreds of Palestinians at the Sabra and Chatilla refugee camps outside Beirut when his troops allowed allied Lebanese militias into the camps. Yet ultimately he transformed himself into a prime minister and statesman.

  22. Hello deer pond friends,

Wog, I'm glad to hear that Froggy's wound is healing. She is such a trooper. Please give her my love.

Eva, I really enjoy your updates about baby Nate. What a precious boy! I will also pray that his eyesight will be saved. It's miraculous what can be done these days to save preemie babies!

I also found it interesting that Joe teaches the blind. He must be a patient man! When I was in college in Vancouver, WA, the Washington state school for the blind, was in the same town. Some of us lived there and helped the children in return for room and board. It was a win-win situation all around. I just loved those kids and even named my son Brian after one of them.

EC, I didn't know your husband was a truck driver. I'm sure he is an excellent driver, but it must be scary to drive in those dangerous weather conditions! I will also add him to my prayers.

Phooey, I never imagined you in 32 degree weather! When I think of you and Page and EC, palm trees and warm beaches come to mind.

Gloria, I meant to answer you a while back. My daughter loves her scrapbook. What a relief. However, I don't plan on doing another one.

Surfie, any new stories about your job? I enjoy hearing about your co-workers.

One last thing I wanted to tell you all. My hubby got his job back! This was to be his last week. On Tuesday, the manager who laid him off, told him he didn't realize how much Jeff was needed in his department, and so they were keeping him on. What a relief! I want to thank you deer pond friends for your prayers. I believe they played a big part in the manager changing his mind.

I will keep all of you and your families in my prayers.

    Love from Paget
