Spring will be sprung on Thursday!

  1. Good Sunday Morning to ya...
Downtown Seattle had their St Patty's Day Parade yesterday. It was nice enough weather considering that it's raining today. It stopped raining just for the parade. I'm not cooking an Irish meal today or tomorrow. They will have corn beef dinner at hospital cafeteria on Monday. That's good enough for me and Sis. I'll wear green before I leave the house. Don't want to get pinched by any Leprechauns.

  2. Mom always cooked anything we wanted for our birthday dinner. I always asked for corned beef and cabbage with carrots and red potatoes. I almost bought the fixings yesterday while at the grocery store, but the smallest corned beef brisket was way too big for one person.

I'll wear green tomorrow, too, and indulge myself with a rueben sandwich from a little restaurant near my place of work. There is a young woman at work who warned she would be pinching anyone not wearing green on Monday.

It was warm and rainy yesterday. Took some of my plants outside to get rained on. Today is still rainy but very cold and windy. Spring is definitely on it's way. YAY!

Veterans memorial sticks to rule banning flag to honor fallen Army soldier
    Published March 16, 2014

The parents of a 23-year-old soldier killed in Afghanistan say a vets group that oversees a memorial in a small New Jersey town “has hurt us deeply” for refusing to fly a flag in honor of their son.

Amy and Patrick Moore say they just wanted to fly the “Honor and Remember” flag over the Bordentown Veterans Memorial to remember their son, Army Spc. Benjamin Moore, killed in a Jan. 12, 2011, bomb blast, as well as others who died fighting for freedom.

    (snip)
She is speaking out after the Bordentown Veterans Committee refused to reconsider its decision not to fly the flag at a meeting March 6.

The newspaper reported Sunday that committee chairman Bruce Throckmorton told the Moores at the meeting that the “Honor and Remember” flag could “dilute the power of the American flag” and “open the floodgates to the next flag and the next flag.”

  4. We're supposed to get more snow tomorrow. Can you believe it? Honestly, I'm ready for Spring!!!!

    1. MORE SNOW! Gosh, that doesn't seem possible. This has really been a long, wintery winter this year. Your trips to Georgia seemed to work out between storms. Maybe this will be the last blast, and we can get on with Spring.

  5. If I was in L.A. now, I'd be writing about their latest earthquake. If it's not one thing, it's another. Joe didn't have to work today, but I had to go grocery shopping since I didn't do it yesterday. I only spun my wheels a couple of times. I'm gonna be a real pro by the time next winter rolls around!

As for my trips to Georgia, 'Wog. The next one is scheduled for early May to celebrate my Dad's 90th birthday. It better be Spring by then!!

  6. Hi everyone. Good Monday morning. Well, I escaped having to make a cheesecake. Who wants to go to all that trouble and not get a taste? Lately I have been feeling like I am in a holding pattern. Like I am waiting for something. Maybe spring, maybe weather, maybe the election. I sure would like to be warm again without a sweater or turning on the heat.

Eva, I have been wondering about how you chose to move to New Jersey. Are either you or Joe from that area? You seem to both have family on the east coast. How long did you live in Cali? I have only lived in So Cal and here in Washington. I have never lived inland.

    1. Gloria, we're living in an area where we used to vacation in summers past. It's a little island and we loved it more in the winter when no-one was around. Every year when we would come East for Christmas/New Year's, we'd start with 2-3 days here before going to Joe's parents in Yonkers. We got in touch with the owners of the house we used to rent in the summer and asked if they'd be interested in renting to us year round. They were, but then SuperStorm Sandy happened. Then they decided to make some changes to their own lives and make this house their primary residence in 2015. We have it until then. I'll start looking around after the summer is over for another place in the area. Not looking forward to that.

Both Joe & I lived in Los Angeles for 35 years, separately and then together. Long time to be away from our families!

  7. Gloria, you probably have a little of both things you mentioned. Cabin fever and bracing for the elections in November. I feel it, too. Spring is definitely at the door here. Putting up with the roller coaster between now and November is another thing. Hope better weather will help us deal with that.

Eva, I wonder if people in L.A. are really freaking about a 4.4 in Westwood, or if the news people are just hyping the "it could be a foreshock" meme. I'm just glad I don't live there anymore! Tornado season is just around the corner here, but at least you know they are coming and have plenty of time to get someplace safe.

I still keep a "bug-out" box: copies of insurance policies, cash, a flash drive with pictures and written inventory of my possessions, and precious pictures that would be hard to live without. Also keep a stash of food and water. Not a lot, but enough to survive on for about 10 days.

I'll be surprised if we have another hard freeze. According to the 10-day forecast, the lowest we'll get at night is 39. I'm going to plant pansies this weekend! I'll wait until our lowest temp at night is in the high 40's, then will start really planting my patio garden. Love this time of year!

Big stuff going on with my job. Don't remember if I've written about it but moved into the CFO's office 2 weeks ago. Janice and I get along really well. It was a little weird at first but we've both settled into working side by side and gotten our respective stuff organized. She is a major pack rat and had to get rid of a ton of junk in order for my 5 file cabinets to fit in the space. I'm learning so much from her, but am really having to push myself. It isn't hard ... it's just new. New is good!

Hope all our Deers have a good evening.

    1. After looking at the news reports about the quake, I figure the media is making more of a story about this than is necessary. Of course, 4.4 feels like a big deal when it's right underneath you. It's strange being on the other side of earthquake stories.

    2. Surfie,
Didn't we get little quakes all the time in Southern California? I'm really afraid to get one in Seattle. Don't think Froggy knows that I have bottles of water stashed in the kitchen. And she wouldn't like my choice of emergency food: spam, tuna, canned fruit and canned veggies. The spam is probably for me. I think she would rather "die" than eat it.

    1. Gloria,
I just heard about a helicopter crash in Seattle as I was walking out door to catch bus. Didn't know what happened until later in the day. We live about twenty blocks away. Didn't hear anything, though we may have heard ambulances, etc. Used to the sound and wouldn't have noticed. Saw pictures of the crash this evening. Horrific scene. We stayed at a hotel about 6 blocks from KOMO 4 TV when west moved to Seattle...while we waited for apartment.

  9. Spring sprang in the last 24 hours. Driving home from work today, I noticed that little patch of grass between the streets and the sidewalks were covered in purple flowers. Sure, they are weeds. But they are flowers, too! And they were not there yesterday when I drove home from work.

We're having an Employee Appreciation lunch at work on Friday. We've had some of the best 2 months in the company's history. Everyone (mostly everyone) has gone above and beyond the call of duty to make it happen. One of our managers won a big monster of a grill in a fishing tournament. We're doing a free raffle and whomever's name gets pulled out of the hat wins it. I don't know if the guys in the shop are more excited about the food or the chance to win the grill. It will be lots of fun.

I won't get a lick of work done tomorrow, and precious little done on Friday. Which means I'll be at work at 6:30 am on both days to get my "must be done" stuff accomplished. I don't mind it a bit because I'm so thrilled to work at such a great place for such remarkable people.

I really do work in a reality TV show. Who else gets to work with GIFTED blue collar people with names like: Pappy, Junior, Whitey, Jericho, Boomer? Not these named, but some have come to us who had to see their parole officer once a week and are now making big-time money and helping others. Love my job. I need to write a screenplay or TV play or something.

Happy Spring! Eva, I'm sure it will arrive for you and Joe soon!

What a wonderful place to work, and it must be heaven having you for a boss! We'll be looking for that screen play. I don't know how you get someone to look at a play, but maybe you know people. It just takes one person to like your play. You really have so much to write about.

    2. I'm still looking for Spring, but I'll take the sunshine we have today even if it hasn't warmed things up much. It's a start.

Love those names, Surfie! Reminds me of growing up in Georgia :)

Ellen Sucks Up to Obama: Obamacare 'Doing Very, Very Well...I Think Everyone's Very Grateful You Did This'
    By Tim Graham / March 20, 2014

Ellen DeGeneres was a completely slavish toady to President Obama as he appeared on her show to sell Obamacare -- not to young people, but to mothers.

The president made his pitch to "especially all the moms out there who may have young people – 26, 27, do not have health insurance, but they think they’re invincible and nothing’s ever going to happen to ‘em – what we’ve said is you never know what life is going to throw at ya." For example, a president who lies about keeping your plan and keeping your doctor. You didn't see that coming! But DeGeneres said "everyone's very grateful" for Obamacare:

DEGENERES: It’s doing very, very well...you’ve got 5 million people signed up so far. [Applause] An enormous number of people have signed up, so it’s successful....Well, for people who are starting to applaud here, I think everyone’s very grateful that you did this. And I think it is important for people to sign up. It’s just better to be covered. You just never know.

Muslims sue after guards interrupt prayers at Empire State Building
By Cheryl K. Chumley / The Washington Times

A Muslim family has launched a lawsuit claiming security guards wrongfully booted them from the Empire State Building after catching them on the observation deck at a late hour and in an isolated spot, bent over and reciting prayers.

Court documents filed this week indicate that Fahad Tirmizi, his wife, Amina, and their two young children were trying to pray on the observation deck July 2 around 11 p.m., CNN reported. They claimed in court filings that their “religious beliefs require them to recite evening prayers wherever they may be at the time.” Guards discovered them huddled in an isolated area, where few tourists travel, CNN said.

    (snip)
The family now wants an unspecified amount of monetary damages.

    (snip)
Empire State Reality Trust spokeswoman Brandy Bergman said to CNN that “the claims are totally without merit and we will respond to them in court.”

  14. Happy Friday from here, too.

A young man named Braxton won the grill. He's only worked for us about 2 months as a shop support guy. He keeps the floors swept & mopped, takes out the trash, moves stuff around with the forklift. He is paid OUR minimum wage of $11/HR. It's the most he's ever been paid in his young life. Anyway, he is a hard worker, as sweet as can be, and a man of deep faith. When the owner pulled his name out of the hard hat, I got a little choked up. Braxton got the biggest smile on his face. He's never, ever owned anything as fancy as that mac-daddy grill!
I'm signing him up for our insurance coverage next week. When I give him his insurance policies & ID cards on probably Wednesday, it's going to be Christmas again for him!
If Braxton keeps on doing a great job, keeps being willing to learn, there is a future for him beyond his wildest dreams with our company and beyond. This right here is the true story of a person who comes from generations of families dependent on welfare who is being shown the way out and fully embracing it.
    PRAISE THE LORD!

Hi Froggy! Hope you are feeling better enough to post a bit. We miss you.

  15. "Dumber than dirt" is precise description of our government. Not quite sure how that happened. Our founders set in a lot of safeguards to keep gov't honest. Apparently they needed a few more. How big will our ruling body become before it implodes?

    1. Our founding documents were written at a time when honor was an important attribute, not so much any more. I truly believe that things will begin to change this year. Even some small local elections are going in a good way. Keep an eye on the courts. Some lower courts are overturning some rulings. "They" are still trying to use the courts and judges against conservatives.

  16. hi gals and gent, my PC was in the shop, came back without Firefox, Adobe, Outlook email and other stuff. Had to spend an hour w/Brighthouse to get email back, so that is where I have been. I can read you on the DH. I wonder , hemm, since my PC is for True the Vote in Florida, you don't think anything was up, right? After that is said, I so enjoy reading all your posts, such a nice change from the political bs, but I spend most of my time on fox news videos after getting rid of cable about 5 years ago. Our flowers and trees are blooming, ever the mail box was covered in green powder. Just grow already, I can't breath this pollen !! EC
And yes to Surfie, we need to hear how Froggy is doing, WOG , you are a brick!!!

    1. EC, thank you for the compliment. I don't feel like a brick. Ya do what needs to be done. And Froggy is a wonderful sister to take care of. You and the Ponders make the Pond a warm, friendly, and fun home. Froggy would never allow any fighting to go on. She made the Pond just so her friends could come and share and be themselves. I just change the pictures. I try to put up some short news clips, sometimes funny things, sometimes a little politics just to keep it interesting.

Froggy is still in pain. Doctor said last week that the bone is healed. She needs to try walking more and exercising the muscles, but she gets discouraged. In the meantime all of us will keep the Pond hopping.

EC, I know that you and Phooey are dog people. A couple others have dogs and cats. We had a cocker spaniel sized dog in Denver, He was such a sweet fellow. Even put up with the cats. We love dogs too, but it doesn't seem right to keep them in an apartment. And I don't want to go outside and walk them.

Speaking of pollen, we have a nook in the living room. It is a perfect fit for Froggy's roll-top desk where she set up her computer. We put the TV and phone on TV desk so she can see TV and it's still visible to the living room. Behind her is a baker's rake that has her music, CDs, headphones, some books. Kind of looks like a tiny office.

Now about the pollen...a large window is on the left side of desk. Gives Froggy lots of light, and a view of the street and McDonalds a block away. In the Spring there are trees that bloom outside the window, and even though they are pretty with the flowers, they do cause Froggy some pollen-misery. Not a lot to do for it. Needless to say that we use a lot of Kleenex and nasal sprays.
