Good Morning, Good Friends!

It's gotta be Monday...

  1. Go Ravens! I didn't think they were going to pull it off, for a minute...

    Who is busy today?

    How's my Phoobers?

I think 'Woggy wants to go try and sell something today; we found a little cache or two of old coins, that might be silver, when we were packing. Also found one grandma's silver and the others' silver plate--Oneida's best, ha! I wonder if it's worth anything...

  2. I'm still sniffling over that wonderful Clydesdale ad. It really stood head and shoulders above all the others.

It's a gorgeous day in SoCal today. I have no excuse for still being in my pjs, except that I am. Gotta get going. It isn't as though reading the news of the day is going to cheer me up. I've been thinking about trying to sell some of my jewelry. I have tons of sterling silver pieces that I've worn over the years that I was working. Maybe I can get a few bucks for them. Have to find a place to take them, though.

  3. Good morning Ponders. Hope you all got enough football yesterday. The Budwiser Clydesdale commercials are always my favorite. Since I am not into football I mostly just watched Animal Planet for the puppy bowl and the kitty bowl.

Froggy, when I was working in the antique store I picked up some tips about selling silver. There is a place that is in Seattle that I know to be reputable. They were one of the dealers in the store. You can sell silver for scrap if it is sterling then it would be sold by weight. Silverplate items are different. Silver coins can be valued by the rarity and collectability to coin collectors also the amount of silver used in the coin. It is a shame that people were buying up sterling just to melt it down. They would bring in portable scales and calculate the worth of a piece. Good luck.

    1. Is silverplate even sellable?

    2. Yes, but not necessarily by weight as scrap. It depends on the piece, quality and condition. Older heirloom pieces still have value. Keep in mind that buyers are thinking of resale so that influences how much they offer for things like pitchers, plates, cups, dresser items and silverware (different from sterling.)

  4. Hi gang. Silverplate can be worth money, depending on it's age and condition. Try going on eBay, typing a description of what you have, and see what comes up. You could get a ballpark idea of what the value is and put them on Craigslist.

Eva, the ONLY person to have jewelry appraised in your neck of the woods is Cosmo Altobelli. If he hasn't moved since I last talked with him, his phone number is 818-763-5151. And he'll sell your stuff on consignment. He's known world-wide, plus he's drop-dead elegant and handsome!

Loved the Budweiser add, too. They always have the best ads! If I drank beer, I'd buy some today.

For some odd reason, I just realized that my hubby would have turned 65 this May and that I can start collecting his social security payments. I dread applying for it because it reminds me again that he's gone ... and I know the morons will put me through hoops collecting it. But he earned it and I'm darned well going to collect it.

    Love to my deer Ponders!

    1. Oh, jeez--I don't know how to work Ebay and fool with it. I've got china to sell too, but one half our family was Brethran issue and they don't believe in having excess, so I'm sure the stuff isn't worth much. We have Uncle and Aunt's crystal brought home from WWII and sterling, though. We're the only two girls for awhile, so we ended up with tons. We got a couple places in town, maybe Sissy can just sell it to him.

YES, get your dear hubs S.S., Surfie--you deserve it. He'd want you to have it!

    2. Froggy, I love old china and crystal. If you send me a pic of the pattern and marks on the back I might be able to ID them. It would be great to help you put some $ in your pocket.

Yes Surfie you are entitled to what your husband earned. the way SS is set up you cannot leave it to your heirs. Besides that the way our pols are robbing SS there may not be much left.

    3. How kind of you, Gloria--let me see what comes out in the wash! We've still been trying to put together a functioning household--it takes us forever

    4. Thanks for the info, Surfie! I'll give him a call.

Definitely go ahead and apply for your husband's social security. He paid into it and you have it coming to you. I know how you feel, though. When my Mom died, I was told she had a small annuity that was to go to me. My first feeling was revulsion. I didn't want to have anything to do with it. The financial people talked me into it by telling me that she wanted me to have it or she wouldn't have named me as beneficiary. It was something SHE wanted me to have. I'm sure your husband would want you to get what you're supposed to get. Gloria's right, though. The way SS has been looted, you may not be looking at much.
