Good Morning, Ponders!

Best Friends.

  1. 5:30 on the West Coast and all is well. Still dark outside, but I see the days getting longer. I love the long days. What's everyone doing today?

Gloria, I saw your eBay. Good job! I've seen one of those old irons somewhere...our grandma or an old auntie maybe. Ebay has changed since I sold on there. I'll have to learn how to put up pictures. It used to be a chore when cameras had regular film. Digital cameras should make it easy.

    1. Sis, love your picture today. Dogs and cats are so cute together when they get along. I think Phooey has a doggie something like this one.

  2. Morning Ponders. Daylight savings tomorrow. I wish they would just leave it as daylight savings time. Winter is dark and dreary anyway, who cares?

Wog I am working on listing more stuff. One item isn't enough. Just trying to get the hang of it. I would like to focus on vintage and household. Val does clothing and everything. My best sale was a 1951 Singer Featherweight sewing machine. I so want the lady that bought it to be pleased with what she got.

    1. Gloria, I was just on Ebay. Saw your listing. I love vintage. They should sell well. I couldn't remember my password and had to reset it. You have me inspired to try it again. But I'll need to do some reading on their policies, posting pics etc. Do your buyers pay the shipping? I just don't remember.

I wish they would leave the time alone too. I thought it was supposed to be for farmers, but farmers are going to get up when they always get up rgardless of time changes on a clock.

    2. Gloria, here's my favorite eBay selling story: In a thrift store, I found a little plastic purse with an embedded animal print that caught my eye. Bought it for $1 and sold it for $500. Turned out it was an early Bakelite purse.

Before eBay, it was easy to find treasures in thrift stores. More difficult now. Still, as my collectibles mentor told me, even the best dealers and "savvy" garage sale homeowners have a blind eye to something. She taught me to look at everything, especially in the junk piles.

Sounds like you're selling personal things right now. That's how I started, too. Researching my family stuff is what gave me the ability to see what was good at garage sales & thrift stores.

I have a compulsive need to stop by the Goodwill that's across the street from my grocery store. Have fun, Gloria!

    3. Surfie, things happen for a reason. After losing my job (the one that I "needed") I ended up taking a low paying job in an antique store. Something that I would not have considered. I have always liked antiques and I learned so much. I was able to use their books to learn about all sorts of things. I especially love vintage dinnerware and depression glass. The Lord is orchestrating things on my behalf. Scott has been selling sports cards for 20 years. Steve sells Audi car parts and Val has been selling stuff too. I am able to get good advice from them. Val has been picking up things for me too.

  3. Almost 9:00 here in OKC. Thunderstorms late today and through the night. Nothing serious. Just good sleeping music.

Gloria, I went to your eBay seller's page, too. Your picture was perfect. When I was actively selling, I realized that great pictures were one of the things that really motivated a buyer. Good job! I'll keep checking in and just might buy something. Love old collectibles. Love.

Hope my cell phone and new computer Spring Forward an hour tonight without me having to manually reset them.

There are so many things I "need" or "should" do this weekend. You know what? I'm giving myself permission this weekend to putz around and do what I want when I want. The Pioneer Woman (fellow Okie) is coming on the Food Network right now.

    Happy Saturday Deer Ponders!

    1. Hi Surfie, I used to be terrified when the thunder came through Denver. I would sit on the floor with our trembling little dog. They have bad lightening around Denver.

You need some "me" time after working so hard at the office. My "me" time usually turns into "eat-everything-I-can-find" time!

What kind of items did you sell on Ebay?

    2. Good morning ponders!

Surfie and Gloria, please start an eBay conversation. And while you're at it, please share any advice you have! I'm a greenhorn when it comes to selling, but I have a basement full of stuff to sell. Not really antiques, but lots of things in good shape. I just wonder if any of it would sell on eBay? This conversation is fascinating! Are there any beginner books I should buy?

    3. I somehow discovered eBay when my late husband's parents house was on Ground Zero in the Northridge Earthquake. Hubs and I brought them to live with us and then we had to deal with everything on their property (and the actual property/house).

They were hoarders. It took a very long time to sort through generations of everything. That's when I became educated about researching something's value on eBay.

I looked at an item and looked at what it actually sold for on eBay as my starting point for its value. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to see what you have and what items like yours have actually sold for.

With that experience/education, I wound up doing estate sales for people in my little neighborhood in SoCal.

When selling on eBay, you have to consider the cost of properly packing and shipping to your buyer. A lot of times, shipping is more costly than the item itself.

If I were selling today, I would post on local Craigslist first. Perhaps simultaneously on eBay.

Gloria, I think about selling on eBay again all the time because it was so much fun at that time of my life. I kept old family treasures and sold the rest back in the day. If you every need to ask a question from an old eBayer: surfinghome@gmail.com

    4. Rule #1 if you find something old that might be of value: DON'T CLEAN IT. Dust it off for a picture, but don't use any cleaning agents. Patina rules.

    5. I have been digging through things that have been hidden for years. LOL I found some antique wood shoe stretchers. I hope I did not actually pay money for them. Can't remember. I looked. Not exactly a hot item right now. For now I'll keep digging. This place is getting to be a mess.

      Surfie you give good advice.

    6. Ebay conversation? Is that different than talking here? You gals and Sir Phoo can talk about anything here ;-)

  5. Gosh, everyone is up early! I have one thing to say (and it isn't about ebay, so forgive me. My friend, Steve in N.C., got the job he interviewed for at Lowe's! It's part-time (20 hours, $10 per hr.), but it's something. He had to take a drug test Friday and his orientation is Tuesday evening. He has to drive 20 minutes to get to the store, but it isn't as if the traffic is like it is out here, so he should be fine. I know it isn't what he wants, but geez, it'll get him out of the house and make him feel as though he's contributing.

Now, back to the ebay conversation :)

    1. Yeah for your Steve! $10 an hour will go farther in N.C. than it will in CA. Something better will come along but until then he will be getting up an going out of the house. He will also be coming in contact with other people. This is such good news.

I know how it is when a man is out of work for a long time. My Steve had quit looking. He was moody and annoying and it rubbed off on me.

    2. Eva, That's great news about Steve! Lowe's is a place to start. Gloria's right about making contacts. And it will give him a job from the area to put on his resume.

    3. Steve must have some real skills and presented himself well to get a job at Lowe's over minimum wage. Good! If he shows up on time and does a good job, he will get noticed and promoted very very soon. Yay!

Many companies with more than 50 employees are hiring part-time people right now because of Obamacare. Those companies will keep the employees who earn their pay and make them full-time.

    4. That's great news Eva! This is a good start and will sure help his morale! :)

    5. Congrats on his job, Eva--I'm so happy for Steve. ANY job is a contribution to be thankful for. You never know what it may lead to.

  6. STUPID NEWS FROM THE NEWS:

"An 86-year-old Minnesota woman who suffers from dementia is facing a felony voting fraud charge after she says she accidentally voted twice.

Margaret Schneider tells MyFoxTwinCities.com she forgot she had already sent in her absentee ballot when she went to her polling place in November.

"It's very hard to remember everything," Schneider said.

Schneider says the matter is particularly upsetting to her because she considers herself a proud American and has voted in every election.

"I've always voted, ever since I've been old enough to," she said.

The criminal complaint against Schneider says records show she submitted her absentee ballot in July. It claims the roster book at her polling place had the letters "AB" next to her name, signifying that Schneider had already cast an absentee ballot.

This aspect of the case is frustrating for Schneider.

"Why didn't they tell me to go home? That's what I'm trying to figure out," she told MyFoxTwinCities.com."

  7. MR PRESIDENT, IT'S OKAY TO SPEND YOUR MONEY, NOT MY MONEY:

"WASHINGTON – Visitors to the nation's capital looking for a White House public tour are out of luck starting this weekend, courtesy of what the Secret Service says is its own decision to deal with the sequester cuts.

But while the agency said it needed to pull officers off the tours for more pressing assignments, the budget ax didn't swing early or deep enough to curtail a host of recent Secret Service-chaperoned trips like President Obama's much-discussed Florida golf outing with Tiger Woods and first lady Michelle Obama's high-profile multi-city media appearances.

Obama's pricey golf outings have been a particular target for Republicans who see them as examples of what they say are the administration's rather selective concerns with running up the tab of Secret Service resources. On March 5, Texas Rep. Louis Gohmert filed an amendment to a House resolution that would prohibit federal funds from being spent on Obama's golf trips until public tours of the White House resumed.

Gohmert referenced press reports pegging the cost of a recent Florida golf outing Obama took with Tiger Woods at $1 million. He also cited press reports saying 341 federal workers could have been spared furloughs if Obama had stayed home.

    1. Hi Wog, Doesn't this just make you see red? I saw the video that a classroom full of kids sent the president, pleading with him to keep the Whitehouse tours. I guess it didn't change things. He wants us to feel pain. What a pathetic, petty man we have as our president!

    2. Paget, how are you today? Any weekend plans?

I had to post this article. pres o and wife are always going on vacation...while people lose jobs and have to cut back on their budgets. I can't even afford to rent a car for the day to take Froggy on a spin around the city; but the president is golfing with Tiger Wood. I guess this is what life is like in a socialst country! Stinks!!!!

  8. Wow, when I looked at the pond I thought I had the wrong day! So many posts at such an early hour!

How are you Froggy? Are you sleeping in this morning? :)

    Where is Phoo?

I have to make a dessert for the family dinner tonight at my parent's house. I think I'll try that starbuck's chocolate loaf again, and add vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce and nuts and whipped cream and sprinkles. The kids usually like the extras. :) Well, I need to get to the store. Have a great day, everyone! :)

    2. Hi, Paget, deer. Yes, I slept in a bit after getting up really early. Sissy and I are trading a cold back and forth or our allergies or whatever and we both crawled off to bed again.

I'm excited about all the selling you gals know how to do on Ebay. We have mother's crystal, our own crystal, grandma's silverplate, Fostoria, a depression glass bowl and some china piece we have to do something with. The cheap things we gave to St. Vincent dePaul... I have a few pieces of the Lenox Christmas stuff I need to give up; we simply don't have the room for them all. I have a few sets of inexpensive Mikasa china to give up, too. I don't know what to do with it all.

  10. Gloria, if it's not worth listing and shipping on eBay, pile it up and have a huge garage sale. Advertise the sale on Craigslist for local buyers. Price everything below eBay or Craigslist price and it will fly out the door. Take time to organize it well. On the day, have help (security). I did this over 2 days when I moved from SoCal to OKC. Two college boys were security and I paid them with pizza.

If you are selling something for $10 and it takes your time/money getting a box & packing material & time managing the listing and getting shipping together ... don't sell it online. Have a Craigslist garage sale.

    1. Surfie, a yard sale is a really good plan. We donated a lot stuff this time when we moved. Didn't really have a yard to sell things, and didn't want to deal with strangers walking in and out of the home.

  11. Is this the heaviest traffic day on the Pond? Seems like it. Thanks so much for everyone's nice words for my friend. I feel so much better about his situation and I'm sure he will once he gets into the routine. He's nervous. 57 years old and starting a part-time job selling appliances. I told him if it helps, he should just pretend he's in a movie and this is his role.

The complex I live in has a giant yard sale for everyone who lives here to get rid of stuff they've accumulated. The trouble is, they do it once a year only. Most people have yard sales when they move like you did, Surfie. I've never taken part in the one here.

I've always been fond of troll dolls. Remember those? I have a little one on my keychain and some tiny ones I used to put on pencil tops. When I got married, almost 16 years ago, my sister went on eBay and got me a Bride and Groom troll couple. I flipped out over them. The bride had a wedding dress & veil and the groom was in a tux. Looking at their homely, smiling faces always makes me feel better when I'm depressed.

    1. Eva, yes, this has been a busy day on The Pond. Usually weekends are kinda slow. Your Steve is going to be fine. We were all worried about him.

Exciting about troll dolls. Froggy used to have several. Don't know if we lost them in all our moving or if they are still packed up somewhere.
