Good Morning Ponders... I thought we'd have some fun today. Does anyone remember this game show on early television? What early TV show did you like to watch?
Boston Blackie Superman Cisco Kid Lone Ranger Annie Oakley Sky King American Bandstand Dragnet Amos N' Andy Howdy Doody Topper Arthur Godfrey and of course Cartoons!
Wow Phooey! Some of these were on the radio. Loved the cartoons. Today's cartoons are odd. If I had kids in the home, I would buy copies of the old cartoons for them. Think you can get copies of old radio shows too. Also loved Burns and Allen.
Sky King was my favorite Saturday show. I really wanted to be his neice Penny. That would be a such messed up scenario in this day and age. Wasn't the plane named Skybird? How about Roy Rogers and Dale Evans? We watched Disney every Saturday night. One of my favorite movies growing up was Pollyanna.
You know what? Sometimes I'm not sure if I remember a show from back then or just think I do because there are channels that run them now. I'm pretty sure I never saw Burns and Allen or the Jack Benny show when they were originally on, but I've seen them since. There were lots of westerns on when I was a kid, but the only one I remember watching was Bonanza. I watched Father Knows Best and the Dick van Dyke show back then. I watched the Jackie Gleason show. Little kid stuff was Captain Kangaroo & Romper Room. When I got a little older, I was crazy about The Man from U.N.C.L.E. I was "in love" with David McCallun.
Eva, I know what you mean about seeing the old shows on TV today. I remember a few shows from the 1940s radio, but I'll leave that alone today. Eva, I watched a lot of the ones you mentioned. Froggy loved Dick van Dyke. I didn't appreciate Jackie Gleason until I got older. Now I love 'em. I read that Jackie didn't like to rehearse. so he ad-libbed a lot of shows...and the old shows went on live!
Gloria, I listened to Sky King on the radio, and Cisco Kid, and the Lone Ranger. Loved Roy Rogers and Dale Evans on TV. Used to love the westerns. My folks had to limit my TV watching or I'd never go out and play. Many times I went to movie matinees that showed the western serials. You had to go every week to get the whole story. Liked the Disney shows and Mickey Mouse Club. Really good memories!
Anybody watch Hopalong Cassidy? He came to my school once. Drove his convertible with cowhide seats.
Yes I did WOG. Here are more from the internet that jogged my memory:
The Little Rascals/Our Gang Three Stooges Laurel and Hardy Boxing( Friday night I think ) Hopalong Cassidy I Love Lucy Milton Berle Ed Sullivan Jack Paar The $64,000 Question I've Got A Secret Price is Right This is Your Life To Tell The Truth What's My Line You Bet Your Life
What fun! I need it because I'm sick as a dog. Don't know where that saying originated. I remember getting our 1st TV in 1959 and remember so many of the shows listed.
Kaptain Kangaroo, too! Loved Annie Oakely. One day, I was riding on the porch railing, pretending I was Annie and the railing was my horse. My dad yelled at me through the kitchen window. Shocked me so much I fell off and cracked my wrist. Daddy felt so bad! But he HAD told me a million times that I was not Annie Oakely and the porch railing was not a horse!
Also loved the Lone Ranger. There's a new Lone Ranger to be released in July. Johnny Depp (swoon) plays Tonto. This is one movie I'll actually pay hard-earned money to see.
Phooman mentioned Boxing. I had two Grandmothers that were as different as night and day. They both loved Boxing, Wrestling, and Divorce Court. Oh yea, and Roller Derby. Go figure.
Boxing appeals to people I'd never think would like it. My father, with education and degrees a mile long, soft-spoken and non-confrontational, watches every fight he can. Go figure, is right.
Hey, by the way, the picture today shows Arlene Francis, John Daly (the host), Dorothy Kilgallen, and Bennett Cerf (standing).
Froggy's thinking of some that she watched. She said: My Three Sons, Dobie Gillis, Branded (with Chuck Conners), Death Valley Days (sponsored by 20 Mule Team Borax.
Oh, I watched My Three Sons and Dobie Gillis, too. It's fun to think of these again.
Joe loved Have Gun Will Travel. The theme song went something like "Paladin, Paladin where do you roam?" His older brother would always answer, "Over here!" Joe would yell, "Mom, make him stop!" My MIL would tell him to stop. When the song came on the next time, Joe's brother would just mouth "Over here" and make sure Joe saw him. He said it happened every time. Ah memories.
'Wog, you & Gloria mentioned Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. I never watched the show, but I knew who they were. One of the jobs I used to have in the 80's, was as a secretary in a bank. One of the other secretaries was a woman named Cheryl who was Roy & Dale's daughter. I remember answering her phone when she was away from her desk and asking if I could take a message for her. The person on the line said, "Just tell her that her mother called." I said okay and hung up. Then it hit me: I just talked to Dale Evans!
We had a great "office friendship" and used to have lunch together often. She really hated the man I worked for, though. He used to think it was funny to whinney like a horse every time he walked past her desk. It got old. Her lips would tighten and I'd roll my eyes. He'd laugh and laugh.
Eva, Love your stories. Roy and Dale had a whole bunch of kids, some their own and some adopted. What a good memory of working with Cheryl.
I had one last thought for the end of my eveing. Does anyone remember when TVs first came out, and they would put them in store windows? Then they would set up chairs in front of the window for people to come and watch the shows.
