  3. Hello pond friends,

Froggy, gators scare me! Phooey, I think you all who live in Florida are brave! I guess it's only natural that the critters like to live in that beautiful area too!

I wanted to tell you what's happening in my neck of the "desert" today. We have our annual hydroplane races. It's a big deal here in the Tri-Cities, as it brings in thousands of people. The local merchants are happy. Most of the older folks just sigh and watch the races on TV. It's mainly attended by the younger generation, and diehard race fans. I have fond memories of attending the race the same day Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. That same day my friends and I were also thrown into the river by a bunch of drunks at the race, so it was a memorable day all around!

An author from Seattle mentioned the Tri-Cities in her latest novel. She said this area is as exciting as boiled broccoli. I had to laugh at that, as it may be true. But, this weekend it is full of action! Having said that, I am happy to watch that action on TV, in the comfort of my living room. :)

    1. Paget,
What do they call your hydroplane races? We used to see them in September in San Diego. They would race right by our trailer park. Very impressive to see, and very noisy.

Seattle has SeaFair this month. Lots of activities, pirates, parades, and, of course, hydroplane races. We can't hear them from our apartment.

    2. Hi Wog,

Our races have been called The Columbia Cup. Recently, they changed the name to the Lamb-Weston Columbia Cup. I guess it's the trend now to have the main sponsor's name in the event or the stadium (for instance, Safeco Field). Yes, they're part of the circuit that will be in Seattle for the Seafair. We're about 3 miles from the race location, and we can hear the boats too. Just a low buzz from this location. :)

  4. Phooey, I am sad for you about loosing Katie. It makes me think about loosing our yellow lab, Chloe. It has been 8 years and her leash and collar still hang by the back door. Labs are special dogs. We have talked about getting another but I am to old to train a puppy.

Am spending time with my grandkids. The level of noise and activity has increased greatly.

I cannot stand the thought of gators and snakes being near. Yesterday there was a huge spider in the bath tub. He got dead. This morning there was another huge one one the wall. 4:00 is to early to start up the vacuum so I thought to wait a while. Well, he is on the move and I can't find him. Somewhere in my house there is a big spider. YUK!

  5. Deer Pond Family,
Phooey still had his beloved Katie yesterday. But we understand that she is not doing well. All of us send our prayers to Phooey.

    1. Sorry; poor choice of words on my part. I sympathize with what Phooey is going through, and my prayers are with him at this time.

    2. Not to worry, deer Paget. 'Woggy just came telling me this morning 'oh God, I said Phoo's dog died! Lemmee go clarify things!'. I laughed and said to put up a note if she wanted to... everyone would understand ;-)

  6. SOMETHING FASCINATING TO READ...AND WATCH VIDEO:
'WOG says: Notice in the video that the girl is NOT looking at the chess board!

Girl is youngest to chess milestone

    CHELMSFORD, Mass.
"Only three years or so since first picking up the game of chess, 9-year-old Carissa Yip can already look down at 93 percent of the more than 51,000 players registered with the U.S. Chess Federation.

She has risen so far up the rankings that she has reached the expert level at a younger age than anyone since the chess federation began electronic record-keeping in 1991, a new level she reached in recent weeks.

Her father, Percy, who taught her until she began beating him, said she could reach master level in as soon as a year.

‘‘Some never reach master level,’’ he said. ‘‘From expert to master, it’s a huge jump.’’

But Carissa, who will be a fifth-grader at McCarthy Middle School this fall, has improved by leaps and bounds.

She first played competitively at the MetroWest Chess Club and Wachusett Chess Club, at the latter of which she’s the top-ranked player. Last fall, she competed in an international competition in Slovenia. In December, she'll play the World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates."
